There are certain moments when a destination becomes something truly extraordinary. In Córdoba, that moment arrives in October.
From 12–22 October 2026, one of Andalucía’s most captivating cities welcomes the ninth edition of the FLORA International Flower Festival, when Córdoba’s historic courtyards become the setting for spectacular works of contemporary floral art.
For travellers staying in Marbella, Málaga or elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, it is also the perfect inspiration for a luxurious two-night, three-day private journey into the heart of Andalucía.
A City Made for Flowers
Córdoba and flowers have been intertwined for centuries.
The city’s famous patio tradition has its roots in the courtyards of the Roman period and was further developed during the centuries of Islamic rule, when water, shade, plants and inner gardens became integral to Andalusian architecture.
Walk through Córdoba today and that heritage remains everywhere: whitewashed walls covered in geraniums, tiny fountains, citrus trees, jasmine and hidden courtyards glimpsed through ancient doorways.
Every spring, Córdoba celebrates this heritage through its world-famous Fiesta de los Patios.
But autumn brings something entirely different.
Founded in 2017, FLORA takes Córdoba’s centuries-old relationship with flowers and gives it a striking contemporary interpretation. International floral artists are invited to transform some of the city’s most beautiful institutional courtyards into enormous, temporary works of art.
For a few extraordinary days, flowers become sculpture, architecture and storytelling.
The theme for FLORA 2026 is “Ephemeral” — an exploration of beauty precisely because it cannot last.
The main installations can be experienced from 16–21 October, with the wider FLORA programme taking place from 12–22 October.
And then, just like the flowers themselves, they disappear.
Córdoba: Where Centuries Meet
FLORA may provide the perfect reason to visit Córdoba in October, but it is only the beginning.
Few European cities contain so many layers of history within such a compact and beautiful centre.
Roman, Islamic, Jewish and Christian civilisations have all shaped Córdoba, and its historic centre is recognised by UNESCO for precisely this extraordinary cultural legacy.
At its heart stands the magnificent Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba.
Originally developed as the Great Mosque during Córdoba’s Islamic period and later consecrated as a cathedral, its seemingly endless red-and-white arches lead towards a Renaissance cathedral rising unexpectedly from within the former mosque.
It is one of those buildings that photographs simply cannot prepare you for.
Outside, wander through the narrow lanes of La Judería, Córdoba’s historic Jewish Quarter, where whitewashed houses, intimate squares and flower-filled balconies reveal another chapter in the city’s story.
Then follow the streets towards the Guadalquivir and walk across the Roman Bridge, particularly beautiful towards sunset when the Mezquita and old city are illuminated behind you.
Córdoba is not a city to rush.
It is a city to wander through.
The Taste of Córdoba
And then there is the food.
Córdoba’s cuisine carries many of the same historical influences as its architecture.
Begin with salmorejo cordobés, the city’s wonderfully rich combination of tomato, bread and olive oil. Try berenjenas con miel — aubergine with honey — or the traditional flamenquín.
For something more substantial, rabo de toro, slow-cooked oxtail, remains one of Córdoba’s signature dishes.
The surrounding province also produces superb olive oils and the distinctive wines of Montilla-Moriles, making Córdoba an unexpectedly rewarding destination for travellers interested in Andalusian gastronomy.
During FLORA itself, food and flowers even meet: the 2026 programme includes floral tastings and gastronomic experiences inspired by the festival’s theme.
A Little Andalusian Indulgence
After a day exploring Córdoba, there may be no better way to slow down than with an authentic Andalusian hammam experience.
Hammam Al Ándalus Córdoba, hidden within the historic centre close to the Mezquita-Catedral and Jewish Quarter, offers warm and cool baths, steam, massage and traditional water rituals inspired by Andalucía’s bathing heritage.
Stepping from Córdoba’s ancient streets into the quiet, candlelit world of the hammam feels entirely appropriate here.
It is less an attraction than a continuation of Córdoba’s story.
Where to Stay
For a special stay, our choice would be Hospes Palacio del Bailío, a five-star historic palace in the heart of Córdoba.
The hotel itself encapsulates the city beautifully.
A restored 16th-century palace reveals tranquil gardens, historic frescoes, Mudéjar architectural influences and even the remains of a Roman villa visible beneath the glass floor of its central courtyard.
It also has its own spa and pool, making it an ideal retreat after a day exploring FLORA and the old city.
In Córdoba, even your hotel can become part of the history.
